Travelers Companies

Emerging Technologies Associates (ETA) has been retained by TravelersCompanies, a Fortune 100 insurance company  since 2009 and  their Facilities Management team at CB Richard Ellis in identifying energy effciency solutions for all of their buildings nationwide to meet their Climate Leaders carbon reduction goals by year-end 2010. While doing so, ETA utilized the ENERGY STAR energy management program to:

  1. benchmark buildings, assist in obtaining the ENERGY STAR label for three Travelers buildings in Hartford, CT in 2009 and 2010
  2. select  the appropriate lighting control strategies and emerging technologies such as LED and HID to gain efficiency at a more rapid pace and in keeping with the financial budget of the Fortune 100 company
  3. train key CBRE Facility team members on the Travelers account on the ENERGY STAR program.

    During the 18-month period, ETA identified over 40 energy efficiency measures that include the following:

     1. vending machines

     2. commercial kitchen equipment

     3. office equipment and other plug loads

     4. HVAC right sizing

     5. daylighting

     6. power quality tune up

     7. lighting retrofits such as:

                      - re-lamping CFLs and low efficiency incandescent with high efficiency LED screw in lamps

                      - replacement of fluorescent hi-bay fixtures with with longer lasting and high efficiency electronic ballast controlled high intensity discharge lamps

                      - LED lamps replaced the high visibility spaces such as the Rotunda, Court Hall in the Travelers Hartford building

                      - the Travelers Tower lights, a historic icon of the city of Hartford, was replaced with color changing LEDs that allow the insurance company to

                      - the LEDs with different events happening in town such as the famed Travelers Golf Tournament and UConn basketball team

     8. data center energy efficiency measures to allow their Hartford data center to qualify for the 2010 ENERGY STAR program

     9. ETA conducted a major study for Travelers on the relationship in their offices on the task/ambient lighting relationship and devised an innovative solution

        that allowed the insurance company to reduce energy waste when empolyees are not sitting at their desk

The project was an integral part of the St. Paul Travelers Companies, Inc. ("St. Paul Travelers," NYSE:STA) participation in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) "Climate Leaders" program as part of its continued commitment to sustainable business practices and focus on improving the environment of the communities in which it does business. Recently, the EPA has discontinued the Climate Leaders program.
